Why do I need a surveyor

Why do I need a surveyor

First of all, lets get the definitions right, what does a marine surveyor do? A marine surveyor is a specialist who performs inspections of all types of vessels. This includes pleasure crafts, tugboats, ferries, cargo vessels, passenger vessels, barges, etc. These inspections are needed for pre-purchase evaluation, resolving insurance issues and regulation compliance.

So if you wish to sell a boat, you probably want to have it inspected by a marine surveyor before you put it on the market. This way you will know the exact condition your vessel is in and you can adjust its price accordingly. Ordering a marine survey is especially important if you are looking to buy a boat. Nobody wants to buy a boat or a yacht which cant sail due to its poor condition, unless you are willing to invest a lot of money into making all the necessary repairs yourself.

Why do I need a surveyor

A marine surveyor can help you determine the condition the vessel is in. A competent surveyor will be looking to see if the vessel is seaworthy, if it has all the proper equipment aboard it and that it is properly installed. Within the same survey the value of the vessel can be determined, as well as the replacement cost for that vessel. Also, marine surveys are mandatory before you can insure your new boat or a yacht. No insurance company in the world will be willing to insure your vessel without having it surveyed at first.

The cost of a survey may vary depending on the surveyor or the vessel. Some surveyors have a flat fee, but the majority have a gradual fee by the length of the boat which they survey. These fees are also different in different countries. However, we strongly advise you not to skip the survey, because this is money invested into your safety, physical and financial. Open water is not a very safe place and your boat must be up to the task to carry you on your cruises and back home safely. Boats with hull defects or other serious problems should not be taken out, especially if the owner has little experience or the whole crew consists of first time boaters.

To find out more about where you can have your boat surveyed, you will have to consult your local surveyors or ask for advice at a local boating club.
